We recommend three quick fixes one can apply immediately to improve the ground and drainage in the chicken run:

  1. The Wood Chip Solution

It is often the best and most straightforward approach. Wood chips (or bark mulch) act like a giant sponge, absorbing moisture while also providing a layer that water can drain through.

  • Apply a generous layer—around 10 to 15 cm deep—over all the muddy areas.
  • Ask for untreated, larger wood chips or bark mulch, not fine sawdust, which tends to pack down and hold water. The larger chips provide better drainage, allowing your chickens to scratch around in them.
  1. The Pine Pellet Fix

If you can’t get wood chips right away, another excellent absorbent material is pine pellets, typically sold as horse bedding at farm or pet supply stores.

  • Scatter the dry pellets over the wet, muddy areas.
  • The pellets will soak up the water and quickly break down into a soft, dry pine sawdust, instantly creating a more walkable and sanitary surface for your flock.
  1. The Coarse Sand Layer

For an area that gets a lot of sun and needs to dry out fast, coarse builder’s sand is a good choice.

  • Spread a layer of coarse construction-grade sand (sometimes called river sand) over the ground. Do not use fine play sand, as it packs down and holds water.
  • Benefit: Sand doesn’t absorb water but lets it drain straight through, allowing the surface to dry out very quickly. It also provides an excellent, natural dust bathing area, which is essential for pest control.
